Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge Technology This Season.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review technology

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in utilizing replay systems.

Replay systems are set to arrive at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Athletes are granted the ability to challenge specific calls made by the official, echoing the practice already in use at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

This innovation is slated for use on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles matches.

This development comes just a season following the All England Club introduced ELC, which effectively ended the longstanding role of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the official to re-examine specific decisions, including:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or person during play.
  • Potential interference end of a rally.

Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a player can ask for.

Case in Point

An illustrative example took place in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and determined the player was responsible for interference, awarding the point to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews are not new for major tournaments. It has been in use at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit will have the system in place at all of its events.

Other Changes

Another innovation at Wimbledon 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves situations where spectators have sometimes been uncertain whether a ball was in or out.

Finally, with exactly 100 days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
