The Reason Los Blancos Possess 'Complete Confidence' in Youngster Thiago Pitarch
Whenever a teenage makes Real Madrid history in a crucial Champions League tie against City, it inevitably draws praise and attention.
In only his maiden start in the competition - and fifth appearance for the club - the young midfielder made a strong impression as the 15-time Champions League winners claimed a three-nil round of 16 first-leg advantage at the Santiago Bernabeu.
The teenager, who also made his Real debut in the qualifying round a month ago with a cameo off the bench at Sporting Lisbon, then helped Los Blancos overcome the English Premier League side in the midweek second leg to confirm a last eight place.
Aged 18 years and 226 days, the midfielder was the club's youngest player to begin two matches in the Champions League knockout stages, beating star Vinicius Jr's previous mark by 10 days.
A Meteoric Rise Through La Fabrica
This talent is the most recent to emerge from the club's academy and is rapidly cementing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most exciting young players.
He signed for Madrid from Leganes in the summer of 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico Madrid and Getafe's youth teams, and initially featuring for the Juvenil C team, where he rapidly created a positive impact.
Pitarch progressed to the B team and it was during a friendly match in which they faced the senior squad, then managed by the former defender, where the youngster is said to have caught the attention of the current Real boss, who took over from the previous coach in January.
Reports would later label the moment as "an instant connection," adding he stood out not only for his skill on the ball, but for the vitality, personality and determination he brought to the side.
'His Greatest Quality Is His Character'
In the summer of 2025, ex-manager Alonso called up the youngster to practice with the senior squad and gave him minutes in the warm-up matches.
However, it was Arbeloa's appointment that became the defining moment in his development as he came on as a second-half replacement in both ties against Benfica that set up the meeting with Pep Guardiola's team.
"I've dreamed of this every night when sleeping, the very first time I started playing football, every day you go to train and every day you play a match," stated the player after his debut.
"I have just fulfilled my ambition with the greatest club in the planet and in the best competition."
Given a starting debut in La Liga against Getafe - where he spent several seasons after moving from Atleti in 2018 - he has retained his spot for the following four as fitness issues to Bellingham and Dani Ceballos created an opportunity.
The teenager has taken it with performances that have belied his youth and inexperience.
"He's a very quick footballer, and you can observe what he's capable of," remarked the coach. "He is incredibly energetic, with great stamina, effort and movement."
Pitarch's mentality has also stood out to his coach.
"His greatest quality is his character," added Arbeloa. "He always wants the possession, and even under pressure, he doesn't feel it.
"I understand people are surprised to watch him start in a European fixture, but he's playing because I had complete confidence in him to perform his normal game.
"He will keep receiving chances with the main squad. It's a pleasure to have a talent like him."
A Future International Decision
Born in Fuenlabrada, in the Spanish capital's community, and grew up deeply involved in Spanish football, progressing through local academies before joining Real Madrid's famous youth academy.
He possesses both Spanish and Moroccan nationality, offering him the option to represent both nations at the highest level.
Under international regulations, players may appear for different countries at youth level without being locked in, with the ultimate choice only final once they appear in a official full international.
Pitarch has played for Spain at youth level, representing both the U19 and U20 sides, and participated in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where Spain made it to the quarter-finals.
Despite this, he has not yet decided to any senior national team, who are monitoring his progress with interest.
Speaking recently, Pitarch said: "I have not taken my final decision yet. Things are positive with Spain, but I will reach a conclusion soon."
His situation mirrors that of other bi-national players such as club colleague Brahim Diaz and Barcelona forward Yamal. Whereas 18-year-old Lamine opted for Spain, Diaz decided to represent the Atlas Lions.
Focus on the Future
For now, Pitarch's focus is on making his mark in the Madrid lineup and rewarding his manager's belief.
He featured for 74 minutes in the 2-1 win at City, which completed a five-one overall triumph and a quarter-final matchup with the German champions.
He was replaced by another academy player in Manuel Angel underscored Arbeloa's trust in younger players to aid the team chase trophies to come.
After his impressive impact to date on European football's biggest stage, Pitarch is expected to be a central figure in that.
"Arbeloa treats me the same. We handle it very naturally. I try not to think about it excessively - I have to deserve my minutes on the field," he commented following the win at Etihad Stadium.
