The Mighty Nein's Introductory Sequence Selected the Wrong Popular RPG Show Song
This latest animated series, the newest animated adventure by the beloved role-playing group, unveiled a new opening credits. It features the beloved group of outcasts, outcasts, and criminals kicking ass and taking names, while also hinting at multiple heart-wrenching personal histories for key figures including the voice actor's mage Caleb, and another actor's warlock orc, Fjord.
Overall, the opening appears amazing. However, I felt that an element was missing in the song choice.
This sequence employs "Welcome to Wildemount", a truly stellar composition created by producer and singer Colm McGuinness. This piece from the official score of that title, the second one released by Critical Role Productions LLC's music division Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a wonderful nostalgic option, and I suspect that fans of the second campaign will appreciate its presence.
But for me, The series' opening doesn't quite capture the hype and excitement that accompanied the show's actual-play adventure. "Your Turn to Roll", written by musician Jason Charles Miller, was an instant classic in my view when it was first revealed in that year, and it only got better when co-founder the performer added lyrics to the tune for the animated Campaign 2 opening in the later year.
Including singing from one actress, another performer, a co-star, as well as the writer, the song was memorable and fun. Back then, I hadn't seen the second campaign yet, but this was such an earworm that I kept it on my phone. This track that knows how to get you pumped before you start an episode of fantasy hijinks.
The Mighty Nein's opening with "Welcome to Wildemount" doesn't strike the same chords for me. It's a grand composition, but from what I know of this party, I feel that its mood is a little off.
Naturally, the creators has already said that the animated show will have a few surprises and differences from the original live sessions. A tonal change for its opening appears as one of them.
The Mighty Nein will be released on the streaming service from Nov. 19. If you can't wait until then, or wish to prepare to get to know the personas of the second series, the actual play are available on Spotify and YouTube.
