The Game UN:Me: An Cerebral Thriller That Blends Silent Hill with Among Us Gameplay
The latest Day of the Devs online presentation unveiled a number of intriguing future games, but one in particular has seized attention: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo experience appears to fuse together the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill title with the paranoid deduction heart of Among Us.
"This is a unique game where a girl containing multiple human souls inside her needs to flee from a labyrinth of the psyche," states developer Yasukazu Kawai.
Entering a Shattered Consciousness
In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed female protagonist who appears to be of teenage years. Inside her exist four separate souls, all possessing unique fears and drives. These entities can seize control at will, releasing their innermost terrors upon her suddenly.
Based on revealed gameplay, much of the action unfolds within a eerie hospital, though additional clips depict the main character exploring a desolate chapel.
An Environment of Individual Horror
"What makes you fearful of? What makes you uncomfortable?" poses game director Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Confined spaces. People in power. Things that seem trivial to others can activate something primal within us. This game explores that concept — fears that are unique to every individual."
The core gameplay loop revolves around managing the persona that emerges at a particular moment. However, these identities will change against your will as you play. While exploring, each soul's anxieties become exaggerated and attack the girl one after another. When the soul shifts, so does the specific fear the player encounters.
Unsettling Aesthetics and a Deadly Decision
At first glance, UN:Me displays noticeable visual similarities with the Silent Hill series. The hospital is populated by nurses who all share the same face, with disturbingly broad smiles. Figures in the waiting room have large blooms growing from their heads should be. Floral motifs are an ever-present element, contrasting natural beauty with supernatural dread.
Yet, UN:Me presents a singular twist. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four souls haunting the heroine is the "true" one. "Each of the personas claims that the physical form belongs to them," explains a developer. "During the game, you need to figure out who is authentic."
Once players have deduced a soul is fake, they are forced to destroy it. But, because every entity can lie or obfuscate the reality, it is incredibly simple to choose incorrectly.
"Maybe you've already eliminated the true [soul] by your own actions," the narration suggests. "The last one standing might be a fraud. In any case, your decisions are final."
UN:Me does not yet have a confirmed launch window, but it is can be follow on digital storefronts.
