Smooth Finish to Lionel Messi's India Tour In the Wake of Unrest in Kolkata
Soccer legend Lionel Messi has finished his multi-day India tour in smog-filled Delhi, after a turbulent opening in Kolkata.
On Monday, thousands of fans gathered in a Delhi stadium to get a glimpse of the Argentina and Inter Miami attacker.
As Messi, joined by Inter Miami team-mates Luis SuΓ‘rez and Rodrigo De Paul, entered the pitch β kicking balls into the stands, playing with a group of children, and signing autographs β the crowd chanted his name.
His plane from Mumbai had been delayed due to fog, sources indicated, and his schedule had to be trimmed. On Saturday, angry fans damaged a Kolkata stadium because they were unable to view him during his event there.
A Busy Itinerary Across Multiple Cities
Messi had a hectic schedule in India, taking part in a series of promotional events in Kolkata, Hyderabad, and Mumbai since landing in the wee hours of Saturday.
Before traveling to Kolkata's Salt Lake Stadium later that day, he remotely presented a 21-meter statue of himself, assembled over 27 days by a large crew in the eastern city.
Disastrous Beginning in Football-Crazy Kolkata
The tour, however, began with a troubled start after angry fans tore seats and flung items towards the pitch at the stadium.
Football is immensely popular in West Bengal state β of which Kolkata is the capital β and a multitude of devoted supporters had forked out up to 12,000 rupees to witness the event.
However, the majority didn't even get to see him as he was enveloped by officials and celebrities on his quick walk around the stadium and then quickly whisked away as the situation became tense.
"Faulty planning of a hyped-up event, disorganization" and security lapses turned the stadium into a "battlefield", as fans β not allowed even a sight of Messi β "released their frustration by resorting to violence."
The unrest, which captured international headlines, cast a shadow over Messi's first visit to India since 2011 for what has been termed a 'GOAT [greatest of all time] tour'.
The promoter in Kolkata has been taken into custody, police said, and a city court has sent Satadru Dutta to 14 days in police custody.
Smooth Visits in Other Cities
Messi's appearances in Hyderabad and Mumbai concluded peacefully, with fans showing their happiness at seeing the global icon online and in press interactions.
Messi also met several political figures and celebrities β film actor Shah Rukh Khan in Kolkata, political figure Rahul Gandhi in Hyderabad, and sporting icon Sachin Tendulkar in Mumbai.
In between these meetings, Messi could be seen acknowledging large fan gatherings in stadiums and dribbling the ball with groups of children.
There were speculation earlier that Messi would meet Narendra Modi in Delhi, but the Indian prime minister traveled abroad on Monday morning on a scheduled visit to Jordan, Ethiopia, and Oman.
The Source of Messi's Immense Appeal in India
Messi's appeal is due to more than his lengthy international career and extensive TV coverage of European football β he's the record scorer for Barcelona β but also the emotional connection that countless Indians have with what is often known as the beautiful game.
