Seven alleged individuals of Germany's left-wing extremist group face trial over series of attacks

Seven individuals allegedly belonging to the left-wing extremist organization Antifa Ost began their trial on this week, accused for violent actions against far-right activists that resulted in the nickname “the hammer group”.

Global terror listing and legal charges

Earlier this month, the United States designated the organization as a terrorist group along with several other left-wing extremist and anarchist networks.

German prosecutors state the group was responsible for attacks on sites in Germany and Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Included in the allegations is the repeated targeting of a restaurant owner in Thuringia, whose venue reportedly served as a meeting point for rightwing activists.

Certain individuals are said to have using hammers against suspected far-right members, leaving some with serious injuries.

Trial details and cross-border allegations

The trial involving six men and one woman is scheduled to continue until July 2026 in the city of Dresden, Germany. A pair of suspects, identified as Johann G. and Paul M, also face charges for attacks in Budapest during early 2023, around an yearly gathering known as the “day of honor” that attracts far-right participants from throughout the continent.

Separately, another German activist, Maja T, is facing trial in Hungary for four counts of attempted assault against far-right activists in the lead-up to the same rally in 2023.

Historical background and group hierarchy

The former East Germany has long been a hotbed for both far-right and anti-immigration youth organizations, as well as the often militant anti-fascist networks that oppose them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G as a high-ranking member within Antifa Ost, tasked with organizing violent acts and bringing in new members.

Alongside Paul M, he is alleged to have arranged training sessions where leftwing extremists trained in fighting methods and rehearsed attacks. At depots managed by Paul M, the network allegedly accumulated tools, pepper spray, concealment items and communication devices.

Prior legal cases and global responses

Another militant formerly involved with the organization, Lina E, emerged as a cause celebre within certain radical left communities following her conviction in 2023 for attacks on presumed far-right targets.

The US designation makes group members barred from entering the United States, freezes any assets they may have within the American economy and makes it illegal providing material support to them.

The German right-wing AfD party welcomed the US decision and urged the German administration to follow suit. In contrast, the German foreign ministry simply stated it had “taken note” of the US designation.

“The danger posed by the [Antifa Ost] group has recently decreased significantly. Key leaders and particularly violent members have either received convictions or remain detained.”
