Minister Says MoD Looking at Security Risk from Chinese Cars, as Personnel Instructed to Avoid Secret Talk in Cars.

An defense official has stated that the MoD is actively investigating the potential security risks posed by Chinese vehicles, and personnel have been instructed to refrain from talking about classified information in all vehicles.

Security Advice for MoD Personnel

In a recent appearance on LBC, Luke Pollard addressed reports that Ministry of Defence officials have been instructed not to talk about secret material while travelling in Chinese cars.

He stated that the MoD is “examining” cars from China within its fleets, however stressed that security is a concern in all modern cars.

Our department has a fleet of thousands of cars in the MoD and those vehicles represent a very small number.
But regardless of if you’re driving a vehicle from China or a car from another country, our instruction to our people is not to plug Ministry of Defence technology into their vehicle, not to have conversations at a secret level in any kind of car, due to the increasing risks of surveillance that exist in all vehicle, to restrict those confidential conversations in secure locations. That’s a prudent and reasonable thing for everyone worried about safety.

When it was put to him that it would be prudent for the ministry to cease using all cars from China, Pollard responded: That is exactly what we are looking into at the moment.”

Wider Security Context

The revelation comes as claims from Norway and Denmark have warned the United Kingdom to the presence of multi-purpose shutdown mechanisms in Chinese-made electric buses, which could allow China to disable public transport and bring disruption to public transit.

Additionally, a Russia intelligence vessel was reportedly directing laser beams at Royal Air Force aircrew, labeled a “highly dangerous” action by government representatives.

This broader security environment highlights the significance of robust measures and vigilance in all areas of official activities, including transport usage to communication practices.
