Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for an extended period when numerous of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to thirty canceled flights disrupting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices sent during the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the frontier with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a approach that remains particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Representatives further stated that "The goal of law enforcement is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and participants so that these practices become not financially viable and present no risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across the region.
Similar occurrences in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
