Line of Duty Confirmed for 7th Season on BBC

Line of Duty cast members
Vicky McClure are set to reprise their roles in the popular police drama

The acclaimed crime series Line of Duty will make a comeback for its 7th installment, confirmed by the broadcaster.

An upcoming six-episode series created by Jed Mercurio starts production in Belfast this spring, as confirmed by the production team.

The actress shared her enthusiasm about the comeback, stating she was "so excited" about the series' return. Her co-star added, "How wonderful it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming together next year."

The last series wrapped up in recent years with a finale that attracted over 17 million viewers. Speculation about a new season have been widespread ever since, but confirmation only came this week.

Fresh Obstacles for AC-12

Series seven will open with the anti-corruption unit having been disbanded and rebranded as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, according to the announcement.

Steve Arnott, Vicky McClure's role, and Ted Hastings remain tasked to combat corruption within the police force.

The team's mission "has never been more difficult", and under these circumstances, these officers are assigned their "most delicate case to date."

New Character and Intricate Plot

An additional officer, DI Dominic Gough, described as a charming officer known for busts of criminal networks, is accused of misusing his authority to act as a offender.

Yet, his case might serve as a deliberate distraction from a larger danger still operating in the shadows, plot details hinted.

Speaking about the renewal, Jed Mercurio commented: "Everyone involved feels enormous gratitude to the show's fans."

"It's an honor to have had so many fans track the ups and downs of AC-12 over six previous seasons and we are thrilled to be coming back for a new season."

Mercurio continued: "Corruption in this country was thought to be over while the series was not airing, so I've been forced to use my imagination."

Cast Reactions

The Scottish actor called appearing in the police drama as "a job of a lifetime".

"Beyond the show's success but the people I've worked with I now call dear friends."

"I can't wait to wear the uniform again and get the team back together," he added.

The Nottingham-born actress remarked: "It goes without saying I'm so excited Line of Duty is returning! Eager to work with Jed, Compston and Dunbar again. The city, we'll be there shortly!"

Adrian Dunbar commented: "As we count down the AC-12 days of Christmas, how exciting it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming next year."

"Pleased with the announcement and looking forward to those mercurial plot developments."

Show History

The drama premiered in the early 2010s and became a highly successful television series of the last decade, featuring notable actors such as Lennie James.

Broadcasters haven't revealed when the upcoming series will premiere.

The finale of season six brought the long-running storyline about the hunt for kingpin known as "H" to a close, and producers indicated at the time there were no intentions for additional seasons.

Nevertheless, the network announced on Tuesday that a seventh series is now in development.
