Gavin Newsom Confirms He Is Weighing a 2028 Presidential Run

The California governor, a leading Democratic figure, has indicated that he intends to decide on whether to launch a presidential campaign in 2028 following the 2026 congressional elections are over.

"Yes, I would be lying if I denied it," Newsom commented when questioned about contemplating a presidential run post the 2026 midterms. "I'd just be lying. And I can't do that."

The governor's current term as governor wraps up in January 2027, and he cannot run again. But, he cautioned that any determination is not imminent.

"Fate will determine that," he said.

Increased Visibility as a Political Adversary

He has stepped forward as a high-profile opponent of the former president's team, employing his digital presence and championing a ballot measure that would expand the party's representation in Congress in as a counter to Republican redistricting efforts. This strategy has invited attacks from political opponents.

Controversy Over Funds

The former president's transportation chief, Sean Duffy, claimed that the governor is indifferent about the state's residents in a weekend appearance on Fox News. The secretary disclosed a strategy to withhold federal funds from the state and threatened suspending the state's ability to provide CDLs.

"I plan to withdraw a significant sum from California," he said, following a recently reported tragic collision in the state involving an unauthorized trucker that caused three deaths and injured individuals.

His administration noted that the federal government had approved the driver's employment multiple times, which allowed him to secure a trucking license under U.S. law.

The transportation secretary had earlier stated he was withholding $40m from the state for ignoring language proficiency rules for commercial drivers.

Pointed Reply from the Team

"Ex-reality TV personality, now cabinet member, fails to grasp U.S. regulations," the governor's team said in a previous release responding to the secretary's comments. "For now, unlike this clown, we'll stick to the facts: California CDL holders had a accident mortality rate nearly 40% lower than the countrywide rate. Texas – the sole state with additional licensed drivers – has a rate markedly elevated than the state. Data speaks for itself. The Trump administration does."

Public Opinion and Campaign Considerations

A recent poll found that a majority of the party and a significant portion of the electorate said that the governor should run for president in the next election cycle. In recent years, his approval ratings has increased to an average of about one-third from approximately 30%, while his negative ratings has decreased from an mean of previous highs to under 40%.

Earlier this year, Newsom remarked while traveling several battleground states that he had "no clue" about his intentions for 2028.

He noted his earlier challenges, including being found to have a learning disability at the early childhood.

"The idea that a person who scored 960 on the SAT, who still struggles to read scripts, who was always in the back of the classroom – the fact that this is even suggested is, in and of itself, amazing," he stated. "It's anyone's guess? I'm looking forward to who emerges in 2028 and who meets that moment. And that's the question for the U.S. citizens."
