From Acclaim to Rage: Right-wing Response to Epstein Document Disclosure is Divided.

Right-leaning responses to the partial disclosure of files involving the Jeffrey Epstein case have been mixed, with some backers of the previous administration pointing out the prominent presence of Bill Clinton and other Democratic figures in photographs, while others lamented how extensive redactions cast former President Trump and GOP members in a negative light.

Justice Department Defends Redactions with Fervent Rhetoric

Justice Department representatives justified the redactions with intense exaggerated language. “At no point in American history has a President or the Department of Justice been so open with the American people about such a sensitive law enforcement matter,” stated Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who released a six-page letter describing the redaction process.

Concerns Raised by Redactions

While Trump's name and image appear in portions of the documents, the widespread redactions raise serious questions about the information may be hidden behind them. Some Republicans swiftly demanded greater transparency.

“People are raging and disengaging,” wrote Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.

Via a online statement, Republican Kentucky Thomas Massie said the censorship break the law, and suggested that a future legislature may move to impeach the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Unfortunately, today’s document release egregiously fails to comply with both the spirit and the wording of the law,” he continued.

A Faction of Conservative Commentators Rally In Support of the Disclosure

However, a segment of rightwing pundits and former President allies came out strongly in support of the Justice Department's actions.

The release—originating from a DOJ led by close Trump associate Pam Bondi—includes scores of pages that are completely censored, and many of the men depicted in photographs have their identities blacked out.

Yet a few do not, featuring prominent individuals like Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of Clinton, especially, enabled some conservative figures to go on the attack.

“This is quite ironic how the political left wrongly claimed President Trump of associating with a sex offender, only for the administration's Justice Department to unveil documents that show Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a convicted sex offender,” wrote right-wing activist Laura Loomer.

“New documents reveal Bill Clinton without a shirt in a jacuzzi with a female that is not his spouse Hillary Clinton,” posted attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There is only 1 reason Epstein would take pictures of a Commander-in-Chief with a girl in a hot tub: Blackmail.”

Former President Campaign Issues Response

Clinton has consistently stated he knew of zero criminal actions by Epstein and has not been alleged to have engaged in any wrongdoing. “The administration has not been hiding these documents for months only to release them at the last minute on a weekend to shield Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s spokesperson Angel Ureña said in a statement.

“The release is about shielding officials from future revelations, or from information they’ll try and hide forever. Therefore they can release as many low-quality 20-plus-year-old photographs as they desire, but this is not about Bill Clinton. Not previously, never will be,” the statement added.

Broader Rightwing Commentary Seems Muted

Nonetheless, broader discourse on the political right was comparatively subdued following the disclosure, particularly when compared with the loud calls for action that preceded the congressional approval to enact a law mandating the documents' release.

The commentator, who not long ago secured media access at the Defense Department, had been one of the most vocal proponents for a complete disclosure. In February, she chastised the Justice Department generally and Bondi in particular after a set of conservative personalities were given hard-copy binders of files that contained little new data.
