Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Remarks

The English opening batter Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of comments made by captain Stokes regarding the dressing room not being "weak men".

The all-rounder delivered those words in several conversations following England's loss in the second Ashes versus Australia earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where the visitors are staring at defeat with a match to spare, the captain noted he had allowed his message to "drift around" within the playing group.

"I have completed the necessary discussions over the past two days that I needed to have done," said Stokes.

But, after the opener scored a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the media with a pinch of salt," he added.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

Stokes issued his "fragile individuals" observation subsequent to England were beaten in Brisbane to fall two matches behind.

The team afterwards went on a holiday to Noosa between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Prior to this match, he revealed his players had held "raw" conversations and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to remain in contention in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, Crawley stated the messaging from the captain and coach McCullum had stayed in line with their previous tenure in leadership.

"It's been extremely upbeat, the same as always," noted the opener. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. We believed we were capable of an extraordinary feat going into this game."

Australia Close of Rapid Ashes Triumph

Crawley's dismissal late on Saturday came during a crucial three-wicket burst by Australia spinner Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Brook and Ben Stokes – meant the chasing side 207-6 chasing a notional target of 435.

Consequently, Australia require just four more wickets on the final day to secure an unassailable 3-0 advantage after three Tests.

A loss will extend England's winless run in this country to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth straight away Ashes defeat.

The current battle is set to be decided in just eleven days of play – after England losing the first two Tests in two and four days each.

Not since 1921, when the Australians completed victory in England in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been decided so quickly. The hosts have also won in eleven days on two other instances in the modern era.

"It's disappointing," admitted Crawley. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel now."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we'll definitely view it with that mindset," he continued.

"The challenge has been tough. They're a very, very good side. It was always going to be tough coming here against them. They entered as the front-runners and they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Place In Question

While Crawley's performance in Adelaide probably answers doubts about his short-term future in the side, Pope appears under immense pressure for his position in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

Pope was out for 17 in England's second innings on day four, extending his modest returns against Australia.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has never made a fifty and boasts an average of just 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has played as many times in the top order in the Ashes and recorded a lower average.

But, the opener insisted any suggestion Pope is being scrutinised originates with "the media" – referring to the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," added Crawley. "He has had a productive year to be frank."

"He has played some really good knocks. This is talk from the outside. There's no discussion of that nature on Ollie amongst the players," he concluded.
