RAF Typhoon jets have operated alongside French warplanes in a coordinated attack targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, according to the British defence ministry.

The facility, located using surveillance, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was situated in mountains just above Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a number of access tunnels down to the depot... preliminary assessments suggest the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the attack conducted Saturday night and every plane involved returned safely, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed extremist governance over large swathes of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation demonstrates British leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to stamp out any revival of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," Britain's Defence Chief the minister stated.

British military aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted comeback" of the group subsequent to its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank all the members of the UK armed forces participating in this strike for their expertise and their bravery," the Defence Secretary commented. "They were part of thousands of British troops deployed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to take out dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our way of life, highlights how UK forces are ready to step up, all year round, protecting the UK domestically and powerful internationally."

In December, the United States armed forces carried out what it called a "large-scale strike" targeting IS targets in the country, after an ambush resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations says IS still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in both countries.
