An Story of Unexpected Kindness: When a University Student Allowed Me to Sleep on Her Dorm Ground
Back in the year 2006, I made a trip to the Australian capital for an admissions interview for medical school. I figured I would book a place to stay upon arrival, however once I got there, a major event was taking place and every single backpackers hostels and budget accommodation were fully booked.
Coming from the city-state of Singapore, I thought perhaps I could just sleep at the airport – but soon learned the local airport, unlike Singapore’s, closes all night. Not knowing quite what to do and growing worried, I hopped on a bus into town and started wandering near a gaming venue, reasoning it was a place to spend those hours in a place operating all night. This was not ideal in the best shape for nailing a crucial interview the next morning, but as a cash-strapped student, luxury accommodation was impossible.
We could all use more folks like that woman.
I must have looked lost as a young woman spotted me walking aimlessly through the city center and inquired whether I needed help. I explained my predicament and without hesitation she offered I could crash on a spare mattress in her student dorm at ANU – which was perfect, as that’s where my medical school interview was scheduled for the next day. She went further by offering a meal: one sandwiches she brought back her work shift. I was able to use warm shower facilities and a secure location to rest to sleep.
In retrospect, I can appreciate what a big chance she undertook as a young woman letting a male stranger she had only just encountered crash at her place. At that time I was in my own unawareness and not even thinking to such safety concerns. Now, as a father, I’m amazed she offered that help – yet incredibly thankful.
I didn’t end up study at the Australian National University, and I didn’t meet that kind stranger again, but I’ve never forgotten that incredible gesture of kindness. It is my wish the universe has repaid her act of kindness tenfold. Our society requires more individuals like that woman.
